Hiking on Tenerife
Tenerife is a stunning subtropical holiday paradise with a landscape full of contrasts. From the green north with palm and citrus trees and the volcano Pico del Teide, to the sunny warm south. In the south, Tenerife has wide sandy beaches where you can enjoy the sun and sea all year round.
Tenerife's subtropical climate also makes the island a very popular hiking destination in winter. In the coldest months of January and February, the average daytime temperature in Tenerife is still 21 degrees Celsius, while the sea temperature is around 19 degrees Celsius.
Discovering nature on Tenerife
Tenerife has overwhelming nature. Besides the beautiful beaches, mountains and volcanic landscape, there are also several beautiful natural parks on the island.
The Parque Nacional de Teide is home to stunning natural phenomena, including the island's two highest mountains, the Pico del Viejo and the Pico del Teide. While hiking through this beautiful nature reserve, panoramic views of the entire island are offered. In good weather conditions, even the neighbouring islands can be seen. You can climb Mount Teide while hiking, but the Teide Cable Car can also be used to get to the top.
Teno & Anaga mountains
The Teno Mountains are located in the north-west of Tenerife and are part of the Park Rural de Teno. The imposing mountain range functions as a backdrop to the island, which ends in the sea and has a beautiful ending with the famous Los Gigantes cliffs.
The Teno Mountains are home to a number of small hamlets, such as Masca, where the houses are all painted white. The Teno Mountains offer the hiker dozens of fantastic walks.
The island of Tenerife is also home to a number of forests, of which Bosque de la Esperanza is the largest. Set in the middle of a valley, the forest is home to thousands of magnificent pine trees.
The forest is located near the cosy town of San Christobal de la Laguna, so a visit can be perfectly combined.
Hiking opportunities
For most, Tenerife is synonymous with mass tourism. Masses of tourists stretched out on the beach enjoying the eternally shining sun. Surprisingly, just a few kilometres away from all the hustle and bustle, there are completely deserted nature reserves waiting to be discovered.
Beautiful rugged nature, mighty mountains, deep ravines, large unique and rare forests and impressive views. Hikers imagine themselves alone in the world. Tenerife offers something for everyone. The great north-south contrast gives hikers the unique opportunity to discover a diversity of landscapes.
Volcanos & more....
Volcanism is, of course, ubiquitous on Tenerife. Especially in the National Park El Teide, you can take some beautiful hikes across the lava fields.
We personally find the north more beautiful in terms of nature then the south. It is also much greener and reminds us a lot of La Palma, where we also went hiking.
Tenerife Trails presents you a number of GPS walks that we have made over the years. The choice is obviously huge, but it's a good and varied mix of circular walks and walks in line that show you every nook and cranny of this wonderful island.
Good to know......
A rental car is quite affordable here and, combined with good public transport, you can take many hikes in line. Be sure to go hiking in the north, you will discover a completely different island. You should also definitely explore the Teno and Anaga Mountains.
Don't underestimate hiking in the mountains! Enjoy your hike and bear in mind that in mountainous landscapes you only walk at 2 to 3 km/h. Add to that some time to enjoy the scenery every now and then and have a drink along the way, and for a 10km hike, you're easily 4 or 5 hours on your way.
But the most important thing to mention is that Tenerife has so much more to offer than beaches and nightlife. If you look a bit further, you immediately enter another world and don't forget that on foot you often get to places no one else gets to sometimes.
